Name: Timothy Walker “Tim” Burton
Born: August 25, 1958
Occupation: Film director, producer, writer
If you’re a fan of films that are somewhat dark and definitely macabre, you’re likely a fan of Tim Burton. Born in Burbank, California, Tim is the son of a gift shop owner and a minor league baseball player. He wasn’t particularly fond of going to school, preferring to spend his time in the backyard making films. Influenced by greats like Ronald Dahl and Dr. Seuss, he made some of his first stop motion shorts as early as age 13.
After graduating high school, Tim Burton moved on to the California Institute of the Arts where he studied character animation. One of the films he made in college, Stalk of the Celery Monster, earned the attention of the Disney animation studio, where he became an apprentice.
After working on several short projects, Burton created a short known as Frankenweenie, a film that ultimately upset the powers that be at Disney and resulted in Burton being fired. His first attempt at a full-length feature was in directing Pee-wee’s Big Adventure, which turned out to be a huge box office success while grossing $40 million on an $8 million budget. It was during this time that Burton approached Danny Elfman to create the score, and the two have had a long-lasting partnership. His success led him to participate in the creation of several familiar hits, including Beetlejuice (1988), Batman (1989), Edward Scissorhands (1990), The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993), James and the Giant Paech (1996), Sleepy Hollow (1999), the remake of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005), Dark Shadows (2012), and Frankenweenie (2012), and several other films.
Burton is well known for developing long lasting relationships with those he chooses to work with. That is why Danny Elfman has done the scores for all but 2 of his movies and he has cast Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter (to the dismay of many) in multiple films. Other frequent flyers include Danny DeVito, Winona Ryder, Christopher Walken, and Martin Landau.
Burton has been in a relationship with Helena since they met in 2001 and the couple has twiochildren together. He is currently estimated to have a net worth of $80 million.
How much is $80 million, really?
It’s enough, if he wanted, to continue producing stop-animation films on his own. Don’t you find it odd that the same movie that initially got him fired from Disney became one of his successes almost 30 years later? Maybe he should use some of that dough to buy Helena Bonham Carter some voice lessons; or maybe an engagement ring. Hmmm…
