Sig Hansen has been a regular on the Discovery Channel show Deadliest Catch ever since the first season back in 2005. As the captain of the fishing vessel Northwestern he has been taking home the titles for both the highest poundage caught and the highest dollars earned several times.

Sig was born in Seattle on April 28, 1966 as the eldest of three brothers. His father, Sverre Hansen, was himself a fisherman and Sig’s grandfather was a crab fishing pioneer in Alaska. Sig began working as a deckhand on his family’s boat as a young teenager. After graduating from Shorewood High School he went into fishing full-time, spending most of the year in Alaska and the Bering Sea – even spending some time fishing in Norway, where his family hails from. He took over as skipper on the boat Northwestern in 1991, slowly transforming the boat into one of the producers.

Sig Hansen is not just into commercial fishing, though. He is a technical advisor for the production company behind Deadliest Catch, and in 2010 be published a book together with author Mark Sundeen called North By Northwestern: A Seafaring Family on Deadly Alaskan Waters. The book reached the bestseller list of the New York Times. Sig even provides the voice for the boat Crabby in the Pixar film Cars 2. In 2015 he participated in the 7th season of Donald Trump’s reality game show The Celebrity Apprentice (where he was fired in episode 8).

Sig has for some time been rumored to make $ 500 000 per season of Deadliest Catch. Our sources, however, indicate that he is paid even more – $ 725 000 is the latest figure we have heard (covering both his on screen appearances and his technical advice to the production company).

Between his income from commercial fishing, his book deals and the TV show, we estimate Sig Hansen’s net worth at $ 7.5 milllion.

So how much is $ 7,500,000 dollars really?

$ 7.5 million is a lot.  Particularly if you spend 10 months a year at sea where both online an physical shopping sprees are difficult.  In any case Sig does not look like a guy who would be much into designer fashion.  If he wanted to stuck up on crab, though, $ 7.5 million would buy him roughly 1,500,000 oounds of crab if Sig were to buy at retail prices.

More practically perhaps; $ 7.5 million would buy Sig Hansen about 625,000 satellite phones or 950,000 pair of arm floats for kids.  Enough for all children under the age of five in Los Angeles County.
