Name: Shelton Jackson “Spike” Lee
Born: March 20, 1957
Occupation: Film director, producer, screenwriter, actor and professor
Spike Lee was born on March 20, 1957 in Atlanta, Georgia. He is the son of William James Edward Lee III, a jazz musician and composer, and Jacqueline Carroll, an arts and black literature teacher. He also has three younger siblings, Joie, David and Cinque.
As a child, the family had relocated to Brooklyn, New York, where he attended John Dewey High School. Upon graduation, he enrolled in Morehouse College, where he produced his very first student film called “Last Hustle in Brooklyn.” Spike then took film courses at Clark Atlanta University and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication. He also completed graduate work at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts with a Master of Fine Arts in film and television.
The legendary filmmaker is married to attorney Tonya Lewis. The couple have two children, Satchel and Jackson.
He made a handful of short and feature films until his critically acclaimed 1989 motion picture: “Do the Right Thing.” The film was nominated for two Academy Awards, including best original screenplay. This movie launched Spike’s career, which has seen him direct an array of celebrated movies, such as “Malcolm X,” “Clockers,” “Summer of Sam,” “25th Hour” and “Inside Man.”
Over the past couple of years, Spike has delved into the world of documentaries, video games and television specials. He is currently (2016) working on a documentary entitled “Go Brasil Go!”
Spike has been nominated and has won numerous awards in his prestigious career, including the Oscars, Golden Globes, Primetime Emmys, BAFTAs and Black Reel Awards.
Despite his celebrated career, Spike has gotten himself into trouble with several controversial remarks, including accusations of racism against Hollywood filmmakers, the United States government and the media. Spike recently announced that he would be boycotting the 88th Academy Awards ceremony, which will be held on February 28, 2016. He accused the Academy of racism because not a single black actor was nominated for an Oscar.
We estimate that Spike Lee’s net worth is $40 million (2016).
So how much is $40 million really?
As most observers of the NBA know, Spike is a huge fan of the New York Knicks. $40 million can buy you one front-row ticket to approximately 90,000 games. He’s also a fan of the New York Yankees so $40 million could also buy you roughly tickets behind the home plate for 150,000 games.
