Idris Elba was born on September 6, 1972 in Newham, London, England. He is the son of Winston, a Ford motor company employee from Sierra Leone, and Eve, a clerk from Ghana. He was raised in East Ham.
He attended a school in Canning Town. Idris worked with his uncle on his wedding DJ business, which encouraged him to start his own DJ company with his friends a year later. Idris would leave school in 1988 and was awarded a place in the National Youth Music Theatre because of a £1,500 Prince’s Trust grant.
Idris has been married twice before: first to Henne Kim Norgaard from 1998 to 2003 and then to Sonya Hamlin for a few months, which was later annulled. Idris has two children: Winston and Isan. He is currently dating famous fashion model Naomi Campbell. He presently lives in London.
His very first role was in “Crimewatch” murder reconstructions. Since it didn’t pay very well and he had to support himself, Idris would work in a variety of jobs, including tyre-fitting, telemarketing and the night shift at Ford Dagenham. He also worked in nightclubs as a DJ, using the nickname Big Driis. Idris auditioned for an array of television roles in his early-20s.
Idris’s first big role took place in 1995 on a TV series called “Bramwell,” an 1890s British medical drama. In that same year, he landed a supporting role in an episode of “Absolutely Fabulous.” As the years went by, he appeared in a large number of television shows, like “The Bill,” “The Ruth Rendell Mysteries,” “Family Affairs,” “Ultraviolet” and “Dangerfield.
The early-200s would turn out to be huge for Idris as he landed a supporting role on an episode of “Law & Order” and then got a starring role in the ultra popular 2002 HBO drama “The Wire.” Years later, he earned parts in such hit television shows, including “The Office,” “Luther” and “The Big C.”
Due to his talent and incredible on-screen presence, Idris turned to motion pictures. He was given the lead for the 2007 movie “Tyler Perry’s Daddy’s Little Girls.” In that same year, he appeared in “28 Weeks Later” and “This Christmas.” After that, he starred in such films as “Prom Night,” “RocknRolla,” “The Unborn,” “Obsessed” and “Legacy.” His parts kept getting bigger as he starred in blockbusters “Thor,” “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom,” “Prometheus,” “Pacific Rim” and “Avengers: Age of Ultron.”
Idris garnered critical acclaim for the Netflix motion picture “Beasts of No Nation.”
Despite his acting success, Idris has continued on with his music career. He appeared in several music videos for the likes of Fat Joe and Giggs. He co-produced and performed on Jay-Z’s 2007 album “American Gangster.” Idris would also DJ the 2007 NBA All-Star parties.
He has been nominated for a Golden Globe Award and has won the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role, Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Male and Critics’ Choice Television Award for Best Actor in a Movie/Miniseries. Also, Idris was selected as one of People magazine’s annual 100 Most Beautiful People in the World in May 2007.
