Michael Shannon was born in Lexington, Kentucky on August 7, 1974. He is the son of Donald Sutherlin Shannon, a DePaul University accounting professor, and Geraldine Hine, a lawyer. He is also the grandson of Raymond Corbett Shannon, a world renowned entomologist. He has two siblings: Dave and Rebecca.
Raised in Chicago by his divorced parents, Michael attended New Trier High School. He didn’t pursue much of an education as he wanted to focus on his acting career.
Michael has been married to Kate Arrington since 2002. The couple has two children: Sylvia and Marion. The family presently resides in Red Hook, Brooklyn.
Michael would make his acting debut as the main character for a music video. He played a troubled teenager for the song “House of Pain” by Every Mother’s Nightmare. Michael would turn to the theater in Chicago and perform on stage. It was in 1993 that Michael finally had his shot to appear on the silver screen.
In 1993, Michael made his motion picture debut by having a small role in “Groundhog Day.” He then landed parts in such films as “Pearl Harbor,” “8 Mile,” “Vanilla Sky,” “Bad Boys II” and “Let’s Go to Prison.” He would finally garner critical recognition for his role in the Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet film “Revolutionary Road” by earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
Michael will be primarily known for his roles in the hit television series “Boardwalk Empire” and in the blockbuster smash hit “Man of Steel,” in which he played the legendary General Zod. He also plays Elvis Presley in the film “Elvis & Nixon.”
He is presently working on six productions, including “The Current War,” “Pottersville,” “The Shaper of Water” and “State Like Sleep.”
Many may be unaware of it, but Michael has been nominated for dozens of acting awards for his work in film, on television and on stage. He was recently nominated for a Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play for Eugene O’Neill’s “Long Day’s Journey into Night.”
Outside of acting, Michael is an accomplished musician as he sings and writes lyrics for the indie rock band Corporal.
