Mickie James was born on August 31, 1979 in Richmond, Virginia. She is the daughter of Sandra Knuckles, a teacher and real estate agent, and Stuart James, a wastewater treatment worker and landscaper. She has six siblings. Mickie’s parents divorced when she was young.
Growing up in Montpelier, Virginia, Mickie graduated from Patrick Henry High School. Upon graduation, Mickie earned an Associate of Arts degree in business administration and then a Bachelor of Arts in operations management. Throughout her youth, she played the violin and participated in equestrian sports.
Mickie was engaged to fellow pro-wrestler Kenny Dykstra in 2007, but they eventually broke up. In 2014, Mickie and fellow pro-wrestler Magnus gave birth to their first child, Donovan Patrick, and were married in December 2015.
She eventually entered the professional wrestling industry in 1999. Mickie would attend a pro-wrestling school in the Washington, D.C. area and the make her debut in 1999 as a valet for KYDA Pro Wrestling. She would eventually make her in-ring debut in an intergender tag team match. In order to improve her in-ring ability, she would train and compete for a wide array of independent promotions, such as Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW), Funking Conservatory, Maryland Championship Wrestling (MCW), Ring of Honor (ROH) and Total Nonstop Action (TNA).
Mickie was eventually signed by World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) and sent to Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW), the company’s developmental system, in 2003. Two years later, Mickie would make her main roster debut by portraying herself as the biggest fan of WWE Women’s Champion Trish Stratus. Mickie would win the WWE Women’s Championship at WrestleMania XXII, and then another four times throughout her tenure at the wrestling titan.
She would be released by the company in 2010. This led her to tour the independent scene and make a return to TNA and become a multi-time Knockouts Champion. In November 2016, Mickie returned to WWE by competing for the NXT Women’s Championship against Asuka. It was later announced that Mickie signed a multi-year contract with WWE, which led her to perform on the SmackDown Live! Roster.
Outside of wrestling, Mickie is an accomplished singer and has released two country music albums, such as “Strangers & Angels” and “Somebody’s Gonna Pay.” In addition, she has appeared in various television shows, music videos and advertisements.
