Name: Oprah Gail Winfrey
Born: 29 January 1954
Occupation: Talk show host, Actress, Producer, Philanthropist
Oprah Winfrey was born to Vernita Lee, an unwed teenaged mother, and Vernon Winfrey. She was raised in her early years by her grandmother in Kosciusko, Mississippi before leaving to join her mother in Milwaukee at the age of six. She was sexually abused by several of the men in her life from the time she was nine to thirteen. Trying to escape her tormentors she ran away but was sent to a home for juveniles, though eventually denied admission because they were full. She ended up getting pregnant as a teen, but lost the boy during his infancy. After that she went to live with her father, who had a strict but safe home for her to live in. Living under his roof she began to flourish and an honor student was born.
At 17, Oprah won the Miss Black Tennessee beauty pageant. She was offered a job in radio at WVOL and eventually got a full scholarship to Tennessee State University. Her career began to take off before she was done with college, so she quit and went to work full time as an anchor and reporter. She moved to the larger market of Baltimore and in addition to co-hosting the news she also co-hosted a talk show called People Are Talking. She then moved to the Chicago market where she was asked to host AM Chicago, a show that was quickly losing it’s base. After just a year she turned the show into the most popular one in town and it was eventually renamed The Oprah Winfrey Show.
Along with her popularity with the American public, she began acting in movies she felt a passion for. She has been nominated for both a Golden Globe and an Oscar. Thoroughly enjoying acting and wanting to increase the amount of quality movies she started her own production company, Harpo Productions. As her popularity soared, she changed The Oprah Winfrey Show from a sensationalised show to one with more heart and feeling. Her interview of Michael Jackson had over 100 million people watching, more than an other interview in the history of television. She has had guests ranging from Tom Cruise to Barack Obama.
In addition to her numerous projects she added magazines to her resume, which only increased her net worth. With her years in the business and her immense success and popularity, we estimate Oprah to have a net worth of $2,700,000,000 (GBP 1,675,000,000).
So how much is $2.7 billion dollars really?
It’s no secret Oprah loves to buy houses and land. If she were looking for a little something different, she could buy the Shelter Island Estate in Flathead Lake, Montana. And when we say in Flathead Lake, we mean in it. This gorgeous estate rests on solid 24 acre granite foundation located in Flathead Lake. With 32,000 square feet, we think it would be just about right for the queen of daytime. At a price tag of $78,000,000 she could even purchase 33 more just like it and still have enough left over to furnish them.
