Many people are familiar with the series A Song of Ice and Fire written by George R.R. Martin. Yet this is just one of many projects he has been involved with. He is also the producer for Game of Thrones which is very popular on HBO. Life hasn’t always been one with money and prestige though.

His family grew up very poor and it was hard for his parents to make ends meet. Martin has two sisters and they often spent time playing games that involved using imagination. He began writing at a young age as a way to pass time. In his stories, he wrote of grand creatures, living in castles, and an abundance of food.

When he was in high school, he got very involved with comic books. He would sell short stories in order to have funds to buy his favorite comics. He also wrote a few letters to the editors of some comics and they got published. In 1970 he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in journalism from Northwest University. This is also when he started selling his science fiction short stories.

Many people are in awe of the modest lifestyle that Martin lives in New Mexico. He drives an older model car and he also has a relatively stylish and decent home that isn’t pricey at all. Fans love that they can walk up to him on the street and say hello or get a photo with him without any problems. All around, he’s believed to be one of the nicest guys personally and professionally. Time magazine listed him as one of the top 100 influential people in 2011.

So how much is $30 million dollars really?

Martin is a huge advocate for education, and feels that not enough money is out there for younger generations to pursue writing. With the average cost of a great education in this realm costing around $50,000 he could use this money to get a whole new generation of great writers out there. With $30 million he could use the funds to pay for the education of approximately 600 students over the span of 4 years.

What a great contribution to society such a gift would offer. Not to mention the abilities these students learned would make it possible for them to fulfill their dreams and to have the career they once only dreamed about. With so many millionaires out there frivolously spending money, this would be quite the inspiration.
