Stephen King was born in Portland, Maine. His father left the family when Stephen and his adopted brother were very young. His mother raised them with money she earned being a caregiver for mentally ill patients. After graduating high school, he attended the University of Maine and earned his Bachelor’s Degree in English. During his time in college, he wrote short stories and sold them to various newspapers and magazines. He also taught at Hampden Academy where he met his wife. They married in 1971. She’s also a writer and they have three children that also write novels.
The imagination and creative style of Stephen King has captivated the world. However, some almost never came to be. For example, in 1973 he was working on Carrie. He became so discouraged with it that he tossed the pages he had written into the trash. His wife found it and encouraged him to complete it. This became the novel that got him recognized.
Many of his books have been turned into great movies too. Among them are Christine and The Shining. The Stand was also turned into a mini-series. He often makes small cameo appearances in his various films. He’s even appeared on the series Sons of Anarchy.
Those that are serious about King’s work also know that he has done writing under the pen name Richard Bachman. He’s dedicated no matter what he’s writing or under what name. He strives to write for a period of 4 to 6 hours every day when he’s working.
King is the first to admit that what he writes can scare him, and he doesn’t go into a dark room! With such an imagination, who can blame him? To date, King has published 49 books around the world, with over 350 million copies purchased in various languages. For his work, he’s won more than 50 literary awards. He’s also been recognized as a huge contributor to the niche of literature.
So how much is $400 million dollars really?
The Boston Red Sox is King’s favorite sports team and he does all he can to attend their games both at home and away. In fact, if you read his books you’ll find that he mentions this team often. The team is currently valued at $380 million if he decided to buy them. Imagine the team knowing that this beloved and often controversial writer is their new owner? It could give them some new nightmares to think about!
