With a career in acting, directing, music, and comedy that spans over 50 years, very few people don’t know who Woody Allen is. His early work began in comedy when he was only 15 years old. He continued to push the bar very high. Not only has he written plenty of great movies, but he often stars in them as well. He has over 40 films to his credit, and they span many generations. Annie Hall from 1977 remains very popular. Hannah and her Sisters from 1986 is also well received. Even in 2011 the work that he did for Midnight in Paris earned rave reviews.
He was born in Brooklyn, New York. His mother was a bookkeeper and his father a jewelry maker. He has stated that his childhood wasn’t a happy one as his parents didn’t get along well and his mother wasn’t very nurturing. Comedy was an outlet for him, and he sold what he created to a local comic. By the time he was 17, he was bringing more money in monthly than both of his parents combined.
After graduating high school, Woody Allen attended The University of New York to study film. He didn’t do well in college though and dropped out to do self-study. When he was 19, he was hired to write for the Ed Sullivan Show. In 1961, he started doing stand-up comedy with his original materials. In 1966, his play called Don’t Drink the Water was on Broadway.
The first film for Woody Allen was What’s New Pussycat in 1965. His work has been non-stop in a variety of directions since he got started. Even as he gets older, he continues to challenge his creative side. He has been married three times and also had two long term relationships with women. One of them was Diane Keaton who he was in a relationship with for ten years.
He is estimated to be worth about $65 million. He contributes time and money to various charities. They include the American Foundation for AIDS Research, The Doe Fund, and St. Francis Food Pantries and Shelters.
So how much is $65 million dollars really?
Finding an out of the way place to relax, write, and to have time to yourself isn’t always easy when you have the celebrity status of Woody Allen. He isn’t one to follow the taste of the commoner either. In Italy there is a wonderful castle for sale with a price tag of $65 million called Castello Baronale. Not only does it have a rich history dating back to the 12th Century, it is also very close to Rome and has been fully restored.
