Name: Christopher Ashton Kutcher
Born: February 7, 1978
Occupation: Actor, producer
Born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Christopher Ashton Kutcher is one of three children. He has an older sister as well as a fraternal twin brother. His brother, Michael, had a heart transplant after birth and was born with cerebral palsy. As a child, Ashton found it very difficult and stressful to deal with his brother’s medical situation. It is said that at one point he contemplated suicide so that his brother could have his heart. Thankfully, his father talked him out of it and a transplant became available shortly thereafter.
Aston discovered acting while attending Clear Creek Amana High School. During that time he developed a love for the arts, but he continued to go through a difficult transition when his parents divorced. At one point he and some friends tried to break into the high school for money, but they were caught when they were leaving. Aston’s arrest led to a third-degree burglary charge, probation, and community service. While the situation taught him enough of a lesson to straighten him out, he had jeopardized his relationship and his chances at earning college scholarships.
Kutcher enrolled in the University of Iowa in August of 1996 but eventually left the school. He talks about his partying years and how he often woke up not knowing where he was. He eventually dropped out of college, doing so after winning the “Fresh Faces of Iowa” competition. As the winner, he had earned a trip to NYC to visit the International Modeling and Talent Association Convention.
And this, his career began.
While Kutcher didn’t win the IMTA competition he competed in in 1998, he did land a contract with Next modeling agency. While with them, he lived every model’s dream – traveling to Milan and Paris and appearing in big-name ads (Calvin Klein being one of his first).
Of course, you probably recognize him from his role in That 70’s Show – appearing from 1998 through 2006. He’s had roles in a myriad of other shows and movies, including Pearl Harbor, Just Married, and The Butterfly Effect. He also produced his own comedy show, Punk’d.
He’s played several roles throughout his career, but is most currently seen as Charlie Sheen’s replacement in the hit series Two and a Half Men. While many people seemed to think no one could fill Sheen’s shoes in the role, the episode in which Kutcher first appeared as “Walden Schmidt” had 28.7 viewers – more than any episode in the show’s history.
Kutcher has a rather diverse portfolio. In addition to acting and producing, he likes to invest in technology start-ups. He has also helped to establish Thorn, an international human rights organization that fights the sexual exploitation of children.
Kutcher and actress Demi Moore were in a long-term relationship. They married in 2005 and Moore announced that they would be separating in 2011. The divorce was finalized in 2013. Meanwhile, Ashton began dating Mila Kunis, his co-star from That 70’s Show in the spring of 2012. They just recently announced their engagement. Ashton Kutcher’s net worth is currently estimated to be $140 million.
How much is $140 million?
First of all, it’s enough to keep him safely under the eye of Katalyst Media, the company who oversees his Twitter and social media accounts (helping him to avoid criticism like he saw when he made an odd comment about Joe Paterno during the Jerry Sandusky scandal). On the upside, it’s plenty to help promote his human rights foundation and additional research for cerebral palsy and heart defects. He could also buy a few more restaurants if he’d like.
While a big name, Kutcher seems to be a smart guy. If he continues to invest and stays out of trouble, he’ll be set for life.
