Name: Charles Matthew “Charlie” Hunnam
Born: April 10, 1980
Occupation: Actor, screenwriter
Charlie Hunnam was born in Newcastle upon Tyne in the UK. His father, Billy, was a scrap metal merchant (some say a gangster) and his mother was a small business owner herself. Charie had one older brother and two younger half-brothers from his mother’s side. His parents split up when he was just 2 and his mother remarried 10 years later.
Despite his education, including degrees in theory and history of film and performing arts, Charlie’s career in entertainment seems to have come about quite by accident, as he was approached by a production manager while he was out buying a Christmas gift for his brother. He played in three episodes of Byker Grove and then earned his first major role as Nathan in the drama Queer as Folk.
After playing just one or two more small roles, Charlie ended up moving to Los Angeles in order to expand his career. He had roles in shows like Undeclared and on the big screen in Abandon, Nicholas Nickleby, and Cold Mountain.
In 2008, Hannum was cast as Jackson “Jax” Teller in the acclaimed series, Sons of Anarchy. He has held that role throughout the entirety of the show, also playing roles in other movies between seasons. You can also find him in Pacific Rim, Frankie Go Boom, The Ledge, Deadfall, and others.
Charlie is also a talented screenwriter. He wrote Vlad, which was sold to Summit Entertainment and will be co-produced by Brad Pitt’s studio. The story, based on the legends of Vlad the Impaler, was one he said he learned in Romania while shooting Cold Mountain.
Much to the dismay of many of the ladies, Charlie Hunnam will not be playing the role of Christian Grey in the upcoming Fifty Shades of Grey adaptation. He had initially accepted the role and then withdrew from the movie due to scheduling conflicts. He is quoted as saying he was excited about the film but simply felt like he was being pulled in too many directions at the same time. Sorry, ladies.
On the upside, Hunnam has just announced that he will be involved in several new films, so you’ll definitely see him on the big screen some more after Sons of Anarchy finishes its final season.
Hunnam was married to Katharine Towne in 1999 but the couple later divorced. He is now in a long-term relationship with Morgana McNelis. His current net worth is approximately $8 million.
How much is $8 million?
It’s enough to go back and buy a ton of shoes for his brother – hah! Actually, it seems as though despite is overall net worth, Charlies does struggle a bit with expendable income, especially after returning the six-figure deposit he would have had if he kept the Fifty role. I actually think he’ll turn out to be a great screenwriter and would do well teaching some sort of theater arts program for children. Maybe in the future, eh? What would you like to see him do.
