Name: Neil Patrick Harris
Born: June 15, 1973
Occupation: American actor, producer, comedian
Please, please tell me you recognize his face. If you don’t, you’ve been living under a rock. Neil Patrick Harris was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he lived until he graduated high school in 1991.
That makes his childhood sound boring, but his life was far from it. Neil is one of the lucky few who started his career as a child actor and continued a successful career through adulthood. While he had a minor high school role in the Wizard of Oz, he was officially discovered while at a drama camp. His first film role, in Clara’s Heart (1988, with Whoopi Goldberg), earned him his first Golden Globe nomination. His first adult role was in 1995, when he played a teenager in Animal Room. Several movie roles have followed, including more recent appearances in Gone Girl (2014).
Older readers will remember Neil Patrick Harris in his role as Dougie Howser, M.D., from 1989 through 1993. His next most famous role is that of Barney Stinson in the CBS drama How I Met Your Mother, which ran from 2005 through 2014.
Don’t think Harris is uncomfortable on the stage, either. He’s worked on several Broadway productions, including his role as Tobias Ragg in Sweeney Todd. He’s had roles in Proof, Cabaret, Assassins, and several other productions.
Here are a couple of things you might not know about Neil Patrick Harris:
- Neil Patrick Harris will be hosting the 87th Academy Awards on February 22, 2015
- Harris turned down the role of David Letterman’s replacement on the Late Show. He thought he would get bored with hosting.
- Neil is a huge fan of magic and currently serves as the President of the Board of Directors of Hollywood’s Magic Castle.
Neil Patrick Harris and his partner David Burtka became engaged in 2011, almost immediately after the Marriage Equality Act was passed in New York state. The couple was married in September of 2014, and they continue to live in Harlem, where they father twins (a boy and a girl) born via a surrogate mother. Neil Patrick Harris currently has an estimated net worth of$35 million.
How much is $35 million?
Oh, you could do SO much with that type of cash – including wasting it on magic tricks and lessons (which, for Neil, would not be a waste). This writer would love to see him do several things, including advocating for equal marriage rights throughout the country and spreading awareness of surrogacy for gay couples. On a lighter note, if he ever gets over the idea that it might be “boring” to host a show, he would probably do very will with his own comedy special.
