Name: Zain Javadd “Zayn” Malik
Born: January 12, 1993
Occupation: Singer and Songwriter
After trying out as a solo performer on British television’s The X Factor, Zayn Malik and four other contestants were united by the judges to form a group for the remainder of the show. Each of the five members of the group had entered the competition as solo performers, but judge Simon Cowell thought perhaps the young men would do well as a group. They competed together for the remainder of the show and eventually took third place in the competition under the name One Direction.
Soon after the final episode, the song they would have released had they won the competition, Forever Young, was leaked to the web and Cowell signed the group to a recording contract with Syco Records. Band mate Harry Styles is credited with choosing the name One Direction for the group which produced four studio albums before Malik announced in March, 2015, that he was leaving the band.
Malik was born in Bradford, West Yorkshire, England to a British Pakastani father and an Irish/English Caucasian woman. He faced some difficulties in school because of his mixed heritage, but changed schools at age 12 and became more comfortable with his heritage. Malik is the second oldest of four children, with one older sister and two younger sisters. He was 17 in 2010 when he auditioned for and won a spot on The X Factor’s seventh season.
Malik’s favorite charities are aimed at children, with his most well-known contribution coming in the form of a graffiti-laden Gromit. The waist-high statue of the dog from the Wallace and Gromit cartoon was one of several auctioned to support the Bristol Royal Hospital for Children. The piece sold for just over $38,000 and helped raised almost $3.5 million for the hospital.
Malik has an estimated net worth of $23 million.
How much is $23 million?
Malik’s love of graffiti art has been demonstrated in many of his charitable contributions, so he might be interested in art by Banksy. The famous British graffiti artist has seen his latest work sell for half a million dollars, meaning Malik could by about 46 of them with his current net worth.
