Name: Floyd Mayweather Jr. born Floyd Joy Sinclair
Born: February 24, 1977
Occupation: Boxer, Promoter
Born into a family of boxers. Floyd Mayweather Jr. says his grandmother was the first to tell him that he didn’t need to get a job; he needed to keep boxing.
Mayweather was born in Grand Rapids, MI, the son of a boxer turned drug dealer and a drug addict. He lost an aunt to AIDS contracted through IV drug use and says it was not unusual when he was in elementary school to come to a yard strewn with used needles. He credits his grandmother with pointing him toward boxing as an outlet.
Mayweather dropped out of high school to box and was a national Golden Gloves champion in 1993, 1994 and 1996. He won a bronze medal at the 1996 Olympics, but many in the sport feel the judge was incompetent and not scoring punches Mayweather landed against his opponent while giving the opponent points when he had not hit Mayweather. His amateur record was officially 84-6. As an amateur he was given the nickname Pretty Boy because the fighting style he learned from his father and uncle left him better able to defend and thus with fewer scars than other boxers.
As a professional, Mayweather fought initially with his uncle as his trainer because his father was in prison on drug-trafficking charges. Mayweather is undefeated as professional. He is a five-division world champion, having won eleven world titles and the lineal championship in four different weight classes. He has won an estimated $505 million in fight purses including $100 million in his recent fight with Manny Pacquiao. His earnings may continue to rise once pay-per-view revenue from the fight is calculated.
Mayweather has three children with ex-girlfriend Josie Harris and was convicted of domestic battery in 2010 when one his children had security call police because of Mayweather’s abuse. Harris refused testify at the trial in an effort to keep Mayweather out of jail and he served a 90-day sentence for the attack. In May, 2015, Harris filed a $20 million defamation lawsuit against Mayweather after he claimed in an April, 2015, that the she was a drug abuser.
How much is $505 million?
Floyd Mayweather like the finer things in life, including spending $4,000 a day for a personal chef during the lead-up to his last boxing match. He also collects cars. If he could find them, Mayweather could almost afford to buy ten copies of the 1966 GTO that is the world’s most expensive car. It sold in 2014 for $52 million.
