Hillary Diane Rodham Clinton is the only daughter of Hugh Ellsworth Rodham , a small businessman, and Dorothy Emma Howell, a homemaker. She has two brothers and was born in Chicago. She grew up in the Chicago suburbs and was active in conservative politics beginning at age 13 when she helped discover voter fraud on Chicago’s South Side.

After graduating at the top of her class and being named a National Merit Scholarship finalist, she attended Wellesley College where she was president of the Young Republicans her freshman year. Clinton would later say she had a conservative mind and a liberal heart with her father’s conservative beliefs and her mother’s passion for social justice. In 1968, she left the Republican Party after what she considered veiled racism at the Republican National Convention.

When she graduated with bachelor’s degree in political science, she was the first student in Wellesley history to deliver the commencement address, garnering her national political attention. She spent the summer working in Alaska and then attended Yale Law School where she met future president and her future husband Bill Clinton. She initially turned down his a marriage proposal, unsure if she should link her career to his.

Hillary was considered a promising young politician in her own right, but in 1974 after failing to pass the District of Columbia bar exam, she moved to Arkansas to teach law. Hillary has said she followed her heart not her head in going to Arkansas, where she would eventually be a partner is a prestigious law firm, a member of WalMart’s board of directors and First Lady. She did not begin using the Clinton name until after the birth of her daughter Chelsea and then only to assuage Arkansas voters.

During her husband’s presidency, Hillary strayed from the traditional First Lady role, taking an active role in legislation and even drafting Clinton’s attempted national health care program. She was the first First Lady to have a postgraduate degree and her own career at the time of her husband’s election.

After her husband’s presidency ended, she ran for and was elected senator from New York in 2000. She was re-elected in 2006, but resigned the seat for the 2008 presidential run. She won more primaries and more delegates than any other female candidate in history, but lost the nomination to Obama. She served for four years as his Secretary of State, but resigned after a terrorist attack in Benghazi, Libya, where she took responsibility for lapsed security.

In addition to practicing law, Clinton has written several books including the controversial child-rearing book It Takes a Village and two autobiographical books. The Clintons have an estimated net worth of between $5 million and $50 million, based on the last time they were required to file financial disclosures. The variance is due to uncertainty in the value of their investment portfolio.

How much is $50 million?

With $50 million, the Clintons could by about 10 homes in Sagaponack, New York, the most expensive zip code in the United States. Currently, they often vacation there.
