Name: Leati Joseph “Joe” Anoa’i, aka Roman Reigns
Born: May 25, 1985
Occupation: Professional Wrestler, Retired Canadian Football Player
Though several of his Samoan cousins are professional wrestlers, Leati Joseph “Joe” Anoa’i intended to make his professional sports career football. He played football at the Georgia Institute of Technology while studying management and then had a brief career as a defensive tackle in the Canadian Football League.
When football proved not be his calling, the man who would become Roman Reigns joined the WWE and trained first in their Florida Championship Wrestling promotion and then in NXT. He used the ring name Roman Leakee competing as a singles wrestler, including a shot at the heavyweight title, and then a short reign as Florida tag team champion. After FCW was rebranded to NXT, Roman was rebranded as well, coming to the ring as Roman Reigns.
Reigns joined the WWE roster in November, 2012, as unknown assailants protecting then champion C.M. Punk. Reigns, and stable mates Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins, introduced themselves as “The Shield,” vowing to fight injustice in the federation. They had several more run-ins before their debut match, a six-man tables, ladders and chairs match on pay per view. The Shield won the match and was later revealed to be working for Punk and his manager Paul Heyman.
As a part of The Shield, Reigns was largely the enforcer, portrayed as the strong, silent type and perhaps even the brains behind the operation as his character became increasingly popular with the crowds despite the fact that the group was considered heels. The team split up in June 2014 after several months on in ring tension and the WWE began to push members of the team as singles wrestlers. Reigns won the 2014 Slammy for Superstar of the Year and the organization continued to push him to headliner status,
Fans, however, seemed to feel that Reigns had not earned his right to headline at Wrestlemania 31 and turned dramatically against the young superstar. After winning the Royal Rumble in January, 2015, Reigns first acknowledge on television that he is part of the Anoa’I family which includes legendary wrestlers Yokozuna, Rikishi, Umaga and The Tonga Kid. He is related to Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson by marriage.
Outside the ring, Reigns is married to Galina Becker and has one daughter. His daughter co-starred with him in 2014 public service announcement on the importance of fathers in their children’s lives. The PSA features Reigns and daughter performing “I’m a Little Teapot.” He has an estimated net worth of $5.5 million with an annual salary of about $245,000 from the WWE. The remainder was earned through bonuses and endorsement deals.
How much is $5.5 million?
Reigns could afford to buy his daughter the world’s three most expensive teapots with that $5.5 million and have about $200,000 left for the tea and crumpets to go with it.
