J.J. Abrams was born in New York City, New York on June 27, 1966. He was raised in Los Angeles by his parents Gerald W. Abrams, a television producer, and Carol Ann Abrams, an executive producer. His sister is Tracy Rosen, a screenwriter.
He attended Palisades High School. After graduating, he enrolled at Sarah Lawrence College instead of film school upon his father’s advice.
J.J. is married to public relations executive Katie McGrath and has three children, August, Henry and Gracie. They currently reside in the Pacific Palisades.
J.J.’s very first gig in the movie industry happened at the age of 16 when he wrote the music for the 1982 motion picture “Nightbeast.” In his senior year at college, J.J. collaborated with Jill Mazursky to write a feature film treatment for “Taking Care of Business,” which was purchased by Touchstone Pictures. This was followed by “Regarding Henry,” which then led to a script for the hit comedy “Gone Fishin’.”
In the 1990s, J.J. had a wide variety of Hollywood jobs, including working in computer animation technology for the film “Shrek,” working on the screenplay for the box office smash hit “Armageddon” and co-creating the hit WB Network series “Felicity.”
Since then, J.J. has become a hot commodity in Hollywood as he has written, produced and directed some very successful and critically acclaimed blockbuster films. Some of these movies include “Cloverfield,” “Star Trek,” “Star Trek Into Darkness,” “Super 8” and “Mission: Impossible III.”
His latest film is the ultra successful “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” in which he co-wrote, produced and directed. After just two-plus weeks in theaters, “Star Wars” surpassed the $1 billion and broke records previously held by the 1997 film “Titanic” and the 2015 blockbuster “Jurassic World.” It has been confirmed that Abrams will have a major hand in the future of the “Star Wars,” “Star Trek” and “Mission: Impossible” franchises moving forward.
J.J. has been nominated for numerous awards for both film and television, including an Emmy, a Razzie, a BAFTA, a Writer’s Guild and an Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films.
We estimate that J.J. Abram’s net worth is $120 million (2016).
So how much is $120 million really?
$120 million can help transform multiple homes (or mansions) into a “Star Wars” or “Star Trek” paradise. It can also buy you the numerous “Star Wars” and “Star Trek” box sets available for sale (we’re talking every single type of box set).
