Angela Bassett was born on August 16, 1958 in New York City, New York. She is the daughter of Daniel Benjamin Bassett and Betty Jane Gilbert. Raised in Harlem, she has a sister named D’nette. Prior to her parents’ separation, she moved to Winston-Salem, North Carolina with her aunt. Her parents later separated.
After her parents separated, she and her sister moved from Winston-Salem to St. Petersburg, Florida with their mother. She attended Jordan Park Elementary School, Disston Middle School, Azalea Middle School and Boca Ciega High School. Since she was told she was going to college, Angela was heavily involved in her schooling by joining the cheerleading group, prep program, the debate team, choir and drama club and achieved straight “A” grades, except a “C” in gym. After graduation, she attended Yale University and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in African-American Studies and a Master of Fine Arts degree.
She is currently married to Courtney B. Vance and the couple has two children, Slater Josiah and Bronwyn Golden. The family presently resides in Los Angeles, California.
Following her graduation, Angela worked as a beauty salon receptionist and a photo researcher. She also searched for acting work in the New York theater scene. Her family roles came in 1985 when she appeared in “Black Girl,” and would subsequently star in other plays on stage.
Angela would then move on to film and television. She made her debut on the small screen in the TV movie “Doubletake.” She then made her big screen debut as a reporter in the film “F/X.” When she relocated to Los Angeles, California she received numerous acting gigs in such films as “Boyz n the Hood,” “Malcolm X,” “The Jacksons: An American Dream,” “What’s Love Got to do With It” and many others. Angela was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for “What’s Love Got to do With It.”
Since then, she has starred in a wide variety of films and television shows that have earned her praise. Some of the films include “Contact,” “Waiting to Exhale,” “Green Lantern,” “Chi-Raq” and “Olympus Has Fallen.” She is presently directing a film based on Whitney Houston’s life (2016) and has been seen on “American Horror Story.”
Angela is involved in both philanthropy and politics. She is a heavy supporter of the arts for youth and was a big time supporter of Barack Obama’s presidential campaign. Angela attended the second inauguration of President Obama on January 20, 2013.
