Name: Gary Earl Johnson
Born: January 1, 1953
Occupation: Politician and businessman
Gary Johnson was born on January 1, 1953 in Minot, North Dakota. He is the son of Earl Johnson, a government school teacher, and Lorraine B. Bostow, an employee for the bureau of Indian Affairs. He was raised in New Mexico.
Gary attended Sandia High School, where he participated on the school’s track team. Following his graduation, he attended the University of New Mexico and majored in political science. He would graduate with a Bachelor of Science in 1975.
He would meet Denise “Dee” Simms in college. The two would eventually get married in 1977, but divorced in 2005. They had two children, Seah and Erik. He would later become engaged to Santa Fe real estate agent Kate Prusack in 2009.
During his university days, Gary earned money by working as a door-to-door handyman. Because he was successful in this field, Gary decided to launch his own company in 1976 called Big J Enterprises. Starting off as a one-man band, Gary focused on mechanical contracting. After several big contracts, including with Intel’s expansion into Rio Rancho, Big J Enterprises eventually became multi-million-dollar company with more than 1,000 employees. He sold the company in 1999. In 2014, Gary was named president and CEO of Cannabis Sativa Inc.
Gary entered politics in 1994 and ran for New Mexico Governor as a Republican. In a GOP year, Gary would win the general election by beating incumbent Democratic Governor Bruce King by a 10-percent margin. With a high approval rating, a mantra of limited government and across-the-board tax cuts, he won re-election by the same 10-percent margin against Democratic Albuquerque Mayor Martin Chavez.
Stepping aside from politics in 2002 after his term in office was up, Gary served on various boards of various non-profit organizations, including Students for Liberty and Students for Sensible Drug Policy. He would return to politics in 2008 by endorsing Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul. Four years later, he decided to run for United States President, first as a Republican and then as a Libertarian. He didn’t gain much traction.
In 2016, Gary announced once again that he’s running for U.S. President as a Libertarian Party nominee. He will compete against Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton and Republican nominee Donald Trump.
Outside of business and politics, Gary is a dedicated triathlete as he regularly bikes in all sorts of marathons and races. He also climbed all seven of the Seven Summits.
We estimate that Gary Johnson’s net worth is $6 million (2012).
So how much is $5 million really?
$5 million could help cover a fraction of the costs of running for President of the United States. $5 million could also pay for around 10 gubernatorial elections across the U.S., but mostly in the small states.
