Leslie Jones was born on September 7, 1967 in Memphis, Tennessee. Since her father was a member of the United States Army, Leslie and her family moved quite frequently. She spent a majority of her teenhood in Los Angeles, California.
Leslie attended a high school in Lynwood, California, where she was an avid basketball player. Upon graduation, she attended Chapman University on a basketball scholarship, where she was a radio DJ. Leslie then transferred to Colorado State University. Unsure what to do with her life, she had several options, including law, computer science, business accounting and communications.
Leslie would launch a carer in standup comedy in 1987. Her first gig happened when a friend had signed her up for the “Funniest Person on Campus” contest. When she lived in Los Angeles, Leslie would have various comedy gigs, and to get by she earned employment at UPS and Roscoe’s House of Chicken and Waffles.
Dave Chappelle had encouraged Leslie to relocate to New York to improve her comedy talents. During her time in New York, she appeared on BET’s “Comic View.” But she would soon return to Los Angeles. As she performed in West Hollywood’s The Comedy Store and opened up for Jamie Foxx, she received bad reviews and was even booed. This prompted her to take a hiatus from her comedy career for three years.
Leslie tried to get back into the entertainment industry in late 2013. There was a casting call for “Saturday Night Live,” in which she attended. Although Leslie didn’t get a role on the show, she was hired as a writer. However, Leslie would appear on the show in 2014, which received mixed and controversial reviews. A year later, Leslie was promoted to the featured cast.
Over the years, Leslie has landed roles in an array of motion pictures, including “Wrongfully Accused,” “National Security,” “A Guy Thing,” “Trainwreck” and “Mastermind.” She is also starring in the 2016 remake of the 1984 blockbuster “Ghostbusters.”
