Mark Cuban was born on July 31, 1958 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He is the son of Norton Cuban, an automobile upholsterer, and Shirley Cuban. He has one brother: Brian. Mark grew up in a working-class Jewish family in the rich neighborhood of Mount Lebanon.
Instead of finishing his senior year in high school, Mark became a full-time student at the University of Pittsburgh. After just one year, he would transfer to Indiana University and graduated from the Kelley School of Business with a Bachelor’s of Science in Business Administration. To get himself through college, he worked as a party promoter, bartender and disco dancing instructor.
Mark has been married to Tiffany Stewart since September 2002. The couple has three children: Alexis, Alyssa and Jake. They presently reside in a suburb of Dallas, Texas and live inside a 24,000-square-foot mansion.
He started his entrepreneurial journey when he was just 12 years old. In order to pay for a pair of expensive basketball sneakers, Mark started to sell garbage bags. Four years later, he started to run newspapers from Cleveland to Pittsburgh. In college, he managed a chain letter.
When he moved to Dallas, he worked as a salesperson for one of the earliest PC software retailers in the city, Your Business Software. Although he was fired, Mark would soon start a company called Microsolutions, which was a system integrator and software reseller. He sold the company to CompuServe for $6 million.
In 1995, Mark founded Audionet with Todd Wagner. Using a single server and an ISDN line, Audionet was converted into Broadcast.com in 1998. A year later, the company generated $13.5 million in revenues with 330 employees. It was then purchased by Yahoo! for $5.7 billion Yahoo! stock during the dot-com bubble.
Since then, Mark has been involved in numerous projects, investment startups and the Dallas Mavericks basketball team. He is also a participant on the hit television reality series “Shark Tank.
Claiming to be a libertarian and an admirer of Ayn Rand, Mark has donated to various political campaigns, both Republican and Democrat. He also had a stake in the centrist organization Unity08. He has been a staunch critic of Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, and has regularly questioned if he is really a billionaire.
Aside from business and entertainment, Mark is quite the philanthropist. He established the Fallen Patriot Fund to assist families of U.S. military personnel killed or injured during the Iraq War. He also presented a $5 million donation to Indiana University.
