Kurt Angle was born in Mt. Lebanon, Pennsylvania on December 9, 1968. Kurt is the son of Jackie and David Angle, a crane operator. He has five siblings: Le’Anne, Eric, Johnny, David and Mark. He grew up as a Christian.
Kurt attended Mt. Lebanon High School and would launch his amateur wrestling career from there as he won varsity letters in football and wrestling and was an All-State linebacker. Upon graduation, Kurt would attend Clarion University of Pennsylvania, where he earned a degree in education. In university, Kurt continued his amateur wrestling aspirations: he was a two-time National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I champion, national runner-up in 1991 and a three-time NCAA Division I All-American.
For nearly 10 years, Kurt was married to Karen Smedley. After several months of separation, Karen filed for divorce in 2008. They have two children together, Kyra and Kody. In 2010, Kurt became engaged to actress and model Giovanna Yannotti and were officially married in 2012. They have two children: Giuliana Marie and Sophia Laine.
After graduating university, Kurt continued his wrestling career and tried out for the 1996 Olympic Trials. Unfortunately fort Kurt, he suffered a severe neck injury, fractured two of his cervical vertebrae, herniated two discs and pulled four muscles. Despite this, he won his trials and went through rehabilitation. Kurt would go on to win a gold medal in the heavyweight weight class by beating the Iranian Abbas Jadidi.
Soon after his Olympic miracle story, Kurt would earn a marketing representative gig for Protos Food, an ostrich meat based foodstuff. However, Kurt would later turn his attention to another form of wrestling: professional wrestling.
He considered joining Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW), but after being offended by a specific part of one show he attended, he turned down the promotion. In 1998, Kurt was given an eight-year contract by World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) and was sent to the Power Pro Wrestling developmental territory. He would make his televised in-ring debut on November 14, 1999 at Survivor Series in a match against Shawn Stasiak.
Kurt would go on to have a very successful career in WWE. He won the WWE Championship four times, the World Heavyweight Championship, the Intercontinental Championship, the European Championship, the Tag Team Championship, the Hardcore Championship and the King of the Ring. He main evented WrestleMania XIX in a match against Brock Lesnar.
In August 2006, Kurt was granted an early release from his contract with WWE.
A month later, Kurt signed a contract with Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA). He would win the World Heavyweight Championship, the King of the Mountain title, the X Division title and the World Tag Team Championship. In 2013, he was entered into the TNA Hall of Fame. Kurt would end his tenure with TNA in 2015.
Outside of professional wrestling, Kurt has ventured into acting. He has appeared in such motion pictures as “End Game,” “Warrior,” “Pain & Gain,” “Sharknado 2: The Second One” and “The Last Witch Hunter.” He has also made appearances on several television shows, including “Duck Dynasty,” “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” and “Criss Angel Mindfreak.”
Despite his age and health issues, Kurt is still considered one of the greatest pro-wrestlers today.
