J.K. Simmons was born on January 9, 1955 in Grosse Pointe, Michigan. He is the son of Donald Williams Simmons, a middle school music teacher, and Patricia Kimble, an administrator. He has two siblings: Elizabeth and David. At the age of 10, he and his family relocated to Worthington, Ohio, and eight years later, they moved to Missoula, Montana.
In 1974, J.K. attended the University of Montana and graduated four years later with a music degree. He would move to Seattle, Washington in order to become a member of the Seattle Repertory Theater.
J.K. has been married to Michelle Schumacher since 1996. They have two children, Olivia and Joe. The family presently resides in Los Angeles, California.
His acting career began in 1987 when he performed in the off-broadway musical “Birds of Paradise.” In 1992, he starred in the revival of “Guys and Dolls,” playing the role of Benny Southstreet. Two years later, he starred in the Wagner operatic satire “Das Barbecu.”
Over the years, J.K. has always had supporting roles in popular motion pictures and television shows. Most people will remember J.K. as a police psychiatrist who appears on three different editions of “Law & Order.” J.K. has also starred on other police dramas, including “Homicide: Life on the Street” and “The Closer.”
In recent years, J.K. has been seen in such films as “Thank You for Smoking,” “Juno,” “Up in the Air” and “Jennifer’s Body.” Last year, Simmons won the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor – Motion Picture and the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in the film “Whiplash.”
J.K. has also lent his voice to an array of animated projects, including “Zootopia,” “Kung Fu Panda 3” and “The Simpsons.” If you’re an avid gamer then you may recognize his voice in the video game “Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3.”
In his biggest blockbuster to date, J.K. will portray Commissioner Gordon in the two-part “Justice League” films.
