Name: Christopher Edward Nolan
Born: July 30, 1970
Christopher Nolan was born on July 30, 1970 in London, England. He is the son of Brendan James Nolan, an advertising executive, and Christina Jensen, a flight attendant and English teacher. He has two siblings: Matthew and Jonathan. He also had an uncle that was employed at NASA. He split his time between Chicago and London.
Christopher studied at Haileybury and Imperial Service College and the University College of London. Although he studied English literature at the latter, he took advantage of the college’s filmmaking equipment and facilities, particularly its editing suite and 16mm film cameras. He would permanently relocate to Chicago in his youth.
He has been together with the same woman since the age of 19. Christopher is married to his producer, Emma Thomas, and they have four children together: Magnus, Rory, Oliver and Flora. They presently reside in Los Angeles, California.
Christopher got his start in filmmaking during his college days when he produced two short pictures: “Tarantella” and “Larceny.” Both films have been celebrated. He would turn to the world of directing corporate videos and industrial films, while working on his own projects on the side.
In 1998, Christopher would direct his first feature film called “Following.” It was critically acclaimed and even compared to that of legendary director Alfred Hitchcock. Two years later, Christopher would make his name with the film “Memento.” Due to the success of the film, Warner Bros. gave him the project of “Insomnia,” starring Al Pacino and Robin Williams. It was a critical and box office success. After looking around for some projects and turning down others, Christopher was selected to direct a Batman film. “Batman Begins” was a massive success and revived the dead franchise.
Before moving on to a sequel, he directed “The Prestige,” which was once again a critical and commercial success. He returned to the Batman trilogy and directed “The Dark Knight.” It is considered the greatest comic book movie ever made. Before moving on to the final film in the Batman trilogy, Christopher directed “Inception,” a gift from Warner Bros. As usual, it was a critical and commercial smash hit. “The Dark Knight Rises” was Christopher’s next project and it generated $1 billion at the box office.
Leaving the world of Batman, Christopher produced “Man of Steel” and directed a science-fiction picture entitled “Interstellar.” It was an instant success and received positive reviews. He is now directing a film called “Dunkirk,” a Hollywood telling of the famous battle of Dunkirk during the Second World War.
Christopher has been described as a very easy going director.
He does not have an email address and he does not use cellphones, though he denies being a Luddite.
