John Malkovich was born on December 9, 1953 in Christopher, Illinois. Growing up in Benton, Illinois, John is the son of Daniel Leon Malkovich, a state conservation director and publisher, and Joe Anne Choisser, a newspaper and magazine publisher. He has four siblings: Amazon, Danny, Melissa and Rebecca.
John attended Logan Grade School, Webster Junior High School and Benton Consolidated High School. After graduating from high school, John attended Eastern Illinois University and then would transfer to Illinois State University. He majored in theater.
He has been married twice before. From 1982 to 1988, John was married to Glenne Headley. A year later, John entered into a relationship with Nicoletta Peyran. They have been married ever since. There were also rumors that John had dated Michelle Pfeiffer after he broke up with Glenne. His family presently resides in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
John contracted the acting bug when he was in high school, where he acted in various plays and musicals. He was also a member of local summer theater and comedy projects as well as folk gospel groups.
A few years after leaving university, John would become a charter member of Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre Company, which included Gary Sinise, Joan Allen and Glenne. Four years later, he relocated to New York City and appeared in many plays, including “True West,” “A Streetcar Named Desire,” “Balm in Gilead” and “Death of a Salesman.” John would be nominated for several awards in this time period.
John would make his motion picture debut as an extra in the 1978 Robert Altman film “A Wedding.” He would get his chance at a feature film role in the 1984 picture “Places in the Heart,” in which he earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.He would go on to have various roles in such films as “Empire of the Sun,” “The Killing Fields,” “The Glass Menagerie,” “Rounders and “Dangerous Liasons.”
Since then, John has experienced blockbuster box office success by starring in such films as “The Man in the Iron Mask,” “Transformers: Dark of the Moon,” “Changeling,” “Secretariat” and “RED.” John has also gone behind the camera by directing “The Dancer Upstairs” and “Hideous Man.”
Outside of Hollywood, John has continued his affinity for the stage by acting in and directing various stage productions. Moreover, he has launched his own fashion menswear line called Mrs. Mudd, provided the voice for a handful of video games and is the co-owner of the Lisbon restaurant Bica do Sapato. In 2008, John lost millions of dollars in the Bernie Madoff Ponzi scheme.
In addition, John is a self-described athiest/agnostic, he has been described as having right-wing political beliefs and he is fluent in French – he lived for more than 10 years in France.
