John’s political career began when he was in college, where he had volunteered for the Eugene McCarthy presidential campaign. A couple of years later, he worked on the George McGovern presidential campaign. Outside of politics, he served as a trial attorney for the Department of Justice’s Honors Program in the Land and Natural Resources Division. He also worked as a Special Assistant to the Director of ACTION.

He would go on to become entrenched in Capitol Hill. Not only did he work as counsel to Democratic Senator Thomas Daschle and on various Senate subcommittees, he also served as a lobbyist. In 1988, John and Tony co-founded Podesta Associates (now known as the Podesta Group), a Washington-based lobbying firm. The organization has worked closely with the likes of the Democratic Party, the Obama administration, Wal-Mart, Lockheed Martin and BP.

John would get his foot in the White House door in 1993, when Bill Clinton became president. He served as Assistant to the President and Deputy Chief of Staff.
