John Podesta was born on January 8, 1949 in Chicago, Illinois. He is the son of John David Podesta, Sr., an Italian-American, and Marry Kokoris, a Greek-American. He has one sibling: Tony, who is a Washington lobbyist.
Growing up in the Jefferson Park neighborhood, John attended Lane Tech High School. In 1967, he would attend Knox College and graduate in 1971. John would earn his J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center five years later.
John is presently married to Mary and they have three children together. The family presently resides in Washington, D.C.
John’s political career began when he was in college, where he had volunteered for the Eugene McCarthy presidential campaign. A couple of years later, he worked on the George McGovern presidential campaign. Outside of politics, he served as a trial attorney for the Department of Justice’s Honors Program in the Land and Natural Resources Division. He also worked as a Special Assistant to the Director of ACTION.
He would go on to become entrenched in Capitol Hill. Not only did he work as counsel to Democratic Senator Thomas Daschle and on various Senate subcommittees, he also served as a lobbyist. In 1988, John and Tony co-founded Podesta Associates (now known as the Podesta Group), a Washington-based lobbying firm. The organization has worked closely with the likes of the Democratic Party, the Obama administration, Wal-Mart, Lockheed Martin and BP.
John would get his foot in the White House door in 1993, when Bill Clinton became president. He served as Assistant to the President and Deputy Chief of Staff. By 1998, John would become the Chief of Staff of the Clinton administration. After Clinton exited the White House, John would join academic and the think tank business.
In 2003, John established the Center for American Progress, a liberal think tank in Washington, D.C., in which he acted as its president and CEO. He also taught congressional investigations, law and technology, legislation, copyright and public-interest law at Georgetown University Law Center.
Most will know John as the chairman of the Hillary Clinton presidential campaign. He has been a part of immense scandals due to the WikiLeaks email dump. The emails that involve John and other campaign staff suggest media collusion, election tampering, graft, corruption and sabotage. He has since accused the Russian government of influencing the U.S. election.
