Carter Oosterhouse was born in Traverse City, Michigan on September 19, 1976. He is the son of Mary López and Roland Oosterhouse. He also has three siblings: Todd Oosterhouse, Tyler Oosterhouse and Sienna Penick.
During his youth, Carter attended Catholic schools in the Traverse area. Upon graduation from high school, Carter attended Central Michigan University, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts in communication and nutrition.
Carter has been married to actress Amy Smart since September 10, 2011. The couple has one daughter: Flora. They presently reside in Los Angeles, California.
Carter’s career started when he was just 12 years old. He learned the craft of carpentry as an apprentice to his neighbor, who was also a carpenter. After university, he decided to move to Los Angeles in order to seek out a career in film and television. Once he arrived in Los Angeles, Carter worked as a production assistant and tape coordinator for the series “Project Greenlight.” He later auditioned for a new series on the TLC network called “Trading Spaces.”
His appearance on the show’s fourth season allowed him to appear on the series spin-offs called “Trading Spaces: Family” and “Trading Spaces: Boys V. Girls.” He later joined NBC as a contributor to the network’s “Three Wishes.” From there, Carter would be a featured expert on such daytime shows as “Rachael Ray,” “The Today Show,” “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” “The View” and several other hit shows.
In 2007, Carter launched two new home improvement shows on HGTV: “Carter Can” and “The Inside Job.” A year later, he became a permanent fixture on “Red Hot & Green” and a host of “Million Dollar Rooms.” He recently started to produce “Home Grown Makeover with Frederique and Carter.”
In addition to television, Carter is active in the world of modeling. He has posed for an array of brands, such as Nautica, Nivea, Miller Light, Gillette, Hewlett Packard, Lincoln and many others. He has also been featured in US Weekly, USA Today, Good Housekeeping and Redbook.
This led People magazine, the TV Guide Channel, Inside TV magazine and Cosmogirl to name Carter as the “Sexiest man on TV.”
Carter is also quite the philanthropist as he formed Carter’s Kids, a non-profit organization that creates and promotes awareness of fitness and self-esteem for children in the United States. His group also helped construct six playgrounds in low-income communities.
