Bill Maher was born in New York City, New York on January 20, 1956. He is the son of William Aloysius Maher, Jr., a radio announcer and network news editor, and Julie Berman Maher, a nurse. He has one sibling: Kathy. His family is a mix of Catholic and Jewish.
Growing up in River Vale, New Jersey, Bill attended Pascack Hills High School and graduated in 1974. He went on to attend Cornell University to study English and history. Bill graduated in 1978, and noted that he put himself through college by selling marijuana.
Although Bill has never been married, he has been involved in numerous relationships. Some of the women include Playboy model Coco Johnsen, Cara Santa Maria, Anjulie Persaud, Karrine Steffans, Ann Coulter, Jasmine Boussem and many others. He presently resides in Beverly Hills, California.
Bill started his career as a stand-up comedian and actor in the late 1970s. Throughout the 1980s, he made a number of appearances on Johnny Carson and David Letterman late-night talk shows and in a wide variety of films and television shows. Some of them consist of “Murder, She Wrote,” “D.C. Cab,” “House II: The Second Story, Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death” and “Ratboy.”
He became a household name in the 1990s when he hosted the hit late-night political talk show called “Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher.” Despite earning tons of critical praise and being nominated for several awards, the show was eventually cancelled because he defended relationships between adults and children and claimed the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorists were not cowards.
Bill returned to television in 2003 when he became the host, co-writer and co-producer of the hit HBO talk show “Real Time with Bill Maher.” Like his previous show, the series has been critically acclaimed and has been nominated for numerous awards.
Over the years, he has provided political commentary to various cable news networks, such as Fox, MSNBC and CNN. Some of his political views consist of ending corporate welfare, legalizing prostitution and drugs, protecting the environment, keeping the death penalty, ending animal cruelty and supporting Israel. He has also been a staunch critic of Islam, which has drawn many complaints from his fellow liberals/progressives.
He has published seven books, including “Keep the Statue of Liberty Closed: The New Rules,” “New Rules: Polite Musings from a Timid Observer” and “The New New Rules: A Funny Look at How Everybody but Me Has Their Head Up Their Ass.” He also produced the documentary “Religulous.”
Outside of the political and entertainment industry, Bill is a part owner of the New York Mets.
