Steven Mnuchin was born in New York City, New York on December 21, 1962. He is the son of Elaine Terner Cooper and Robert E. Mnuchin, a partner at Goldman Sachs and art gallery founder. He has one sibling: Alan. His great-grandfather was a diamond dealer in Belgium.
Steven attended Riverdale Country School. Upon graduation, he attended Yale Universty and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in 1985. During his university days, he was the publisher of Yale Daily News and belonged to Skull and Bones.
He has been married twice before, including to Heather deForest Crosby, and has three children: Dylan, John and Emma. Steven is presently engaged to Scottish actress Louise Linton. The family presently resides in Washington, D.C.
Steven’s career began in the early 1980s when he was still studying at Yale University. He was a trainee at investment bank Salomon Brothers. Following his graduation, he began to work for Goldman Sachs and started in the mortgage department. By 1994, Steven became a partner at the financial institution after holding numerous titles. In 2002, he left the firm to join ESL Investments as vice chairman of hedge funds. Later, he would establish SFM Capital Management with George Soros and a hedge fund named Dune Capital Management.
Steven has been very much involved in politics over the years. He has donated to the presidential election campaigns of former U.S. President Barack Obama, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney and former U.S. Vice President Al Gore. He has contributed more funds to Democratic campaigns than Republican campaigns.
Steven would eventually be appointed as the main fundraiser for Donald Trump’s presidential campaign. After winning the presidential election, Trump announced that he would nominate Steven as Secretary of the Treasury. He was confirmed on February 13, 2017 by a 53-47 vote. He has noted that he has lost a lot of friends in California and New York because of his support of Trump.
Outside of politics and finance, Steven has been heavily involved in the entertainment industry. In 2004, he founded RatPac-Dune Entertainment, a group that finances motion pictures. His organization has executive produced a wide array of hit films, such as “American Sniper,” “X-Men,” “Mad Max: Fury Road,” “Edge of Tomorrow,” “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice,” “Suicide Squad” and “The Accountant.” He also appeared in one of the films: “Rules Don’t Apply.”
