Angela Merkel was born in Hamburg, West Germany on July 17, 1954. She is the daughter of Herlind Jentzsch, an English and Latin teacher, and Horst Kasner, a Lutheran pastor. She has two siblings: Marcus, a physicist, and Irene, an occupational therapist.
In her youth, Angela studied Russian and mathematics in Templin. She would then attend the University of Leipzig, studying physics for five years. Angela would later work and study at the Central Institute for Physical Chemistry of the Academy of Sciences in Berlin-Adlershof, earning a doctorate. Throughout her school days, she belonged to several political organizations, including the Free German Youth (FDJ), the Socialist Unity Party and later the Democratic Awakening.
At just 23 years of age, Angela would marry physics student Ulrich Merkel, but it lasted only five years. In 1998, Angela would marry quantum chemist Joachim Sauer after 17 years of dating.
In 1990, Angela entered the realm of politics by entering the federal election. She would win the constituency of Stralsund-Nordvorpommern-Rugen in the district of Vorpommern-Rugen, and would subsequently be re-elected six times. Angela was appointed to the Cabinet and served as the Minister for Women and Youth. Four years later, she was promoted to the role of Minister for the Environment and Nuclear Safety.
After serving as the Secretary-General for the Christian Democrats Union, Angela would win the party’s nomination in 2005. Her party would go on to win three consecutive elections.
Over the years, some of her policies have consisted of supporting international trade agreements, strengthening European cooperation, maintaining a modest immigration plan and reforming social welfare programs. She has been vehemently criticized for claiming multiculturalism has been a failure and German society doesn’t have enough Christianity.
Throughout her tenure as Chancellor of Germany, Angela has been the recipient of the U.S. Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Portuguese Grand Cross of the Order of Prince Henry, the Israeli President’s Medal and the Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Norwegian Order of Merit.
In addition to politics, Angela is deeply religious, belonging to the Lutheran Evangelical Church in Berlin. She also has a fear of dogs, believes the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) is similar to the Stasi and has been named one of the most powerful women in the world on numerous occasions by various international publications.
