Steven Soderbergh was born in Atlanta, Georgia on January 14, 1963. He is the son of Peter Andrew Soderbergh, a university administrator and educator, and Mary Ann Bernard, an adult education and alternative education instructor. He has one sibling: Charley.

After his family relocated to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Steven attended the Louisiana State University Laboratory School. He also studied at the university’s film animation class. He did not pursue any post-secondary studies.

Steven was first married to actress Betsy Brantley in 1989 and have one child together, Sarah. The couple filed for divorce in 1994. Steven is presently married to Jules Asner, a television personality. They presently live in New York City. He also has a love child by the name of Pearl Button Anderson.

His first job out of high school was a game show scorer and cue card holder. He also worked as a freelance film editor. One of his biggest breaks occurred in 1985 when he directed the Grammy-nominated concert video 9012Live for the rock band Yes.

In 1989, Steven wrote, produced and directed the hit motion picture “Sex, Lies, and Videotape.” It won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival and Steven became the second-youngest director to win the award.

Following his initial success, Steven made a series of commercial disappointments, including “Kafka,” “King of the Hill” and “The Underneath.” It wasn’t until 1998 when he emulated his original success with the movie “Out of Sight,” starring George Clooney and Jennifer Lopez. This started a trend of critical and commercial successes for the next few years: “Traffic,” “Erin Brockovich,” “Ocean’s 11,” “Ocean’s 12” and “Solaris.”

For the next several years, Steven remained busy by directing a wide array of movies, like “The Good German,” “Che,” “The Informant!,” “Haywire,” “Contagion,” “Magic Mike” and “Side Effects.” He has received early buzz for his latest picture called “Lucky Logan,” starring Channing Tatum and Daniel Craig.

Steven has also worked in television, producing and/or directing “Fallen Angels,” “K Street,” “The Knick” and “The Girlfriend Experience.”

He often uses different aliases for when he performs a certain task on set. For instance, he uses the pseudonym Peter Andrews when he is the cinematographer.
