Charlize Theron was born on August 7, 1975 in Benoni, South Africa. She is the daughter of Charles Jacobus Theron and Gerda Jacoba Aletta Meritz, who both owned a farm – her great-great-uncle, Danie Theron, is a major Second Boer War figure. Her father died when her mother shot him.
Charlize attended Putfontein Primary School and later the National School of the Arts in Johannesburg.
Charlize was engaged to actor Sean Penn from 2014 to 2015, but the couple split up. Prior to their relationship, Charlize was romantically involved with several individuals, including Stuart Townsend, Keanu Reeves, Stephan Jenkins and Alexander Skarsgard. Charlize has two adopted children, August and Jackson. The family presently resides in Los Angeles, California.
She set out to become a dancer, but she turned to modeling in her youth when she won a modeling contract and relocated to Milan, Italy. After her one-year modeling stint, Charlize and her mother moved to the United States and enrolled in the Joffrey Ballet School in New York City.
Her mother then sent her to Los Angeles, and received work in the movie business by accident from talent agent John Crosby, whom she later fired. Charlize eventually made her motion picture debut in the 1995 film “Children of the Corn: Urban Harvest” in a non-speaking role. A year later, she appeared in “2 Days in the Valley.” By the late-1990s, Charlize appeared in major roles in Hollywood feature films, including “The Devil’s Advocate,” “The Cider House Rules” and “Mighty Joe Young.”
At the start of the year 2000, Charlize starred in five films, including the disaster known as “Reindeer Games.” After a brief hiatus from moviemaking, Charlize starred in the critically acclaimed and award-winning film “Monster,” winning a Best Actress Oscar. Outside of the entertainment industry, Charlize has been an avid philanthropist, launching the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project (CTAOP) in 2007. Two years later, she was appointed the United Nations Messenger of Peace by then-UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon. Charlize also became actively involved in animal and women’s rights organizations
