Jose started his baseball career when he participated in a tryout at the Houston Astros facility in Venezuela. Despite being cut in his first attempt due to his height – he is 5’6, 165 pounds – he took part in the tryout a year later. He impressed officials and was signed as an undrafted free agent.
After a short stint in the Venezuelan Summer League, Jose played in minor league ball in the United States. He excelled in Class A and AA leagues, which helped him avoid Class AAA and was called up to the major league in summer 2011.
Jose excelled in his first two seasons with the Houston Astros, prompting the team to sign him to a four-year extension worth $12.5 million. He continued his dominance for the next few years: named a five-time All-Star, winning a Gold Glove at second base and getting the silver slugger award three times.
During Game 1 of the American League Division Series against the Boston Red Sox, Jose became just the ninth player in baseball history to hit three home runs in a postseason game.
As of the end of the 2017 MLB season, Jose is hitting .316 with 1,250 hits, 84 home runs, 403 RBIs and 231 stolen bases. He is the leading candidate for the 2017 American League Most Valuable Player (MVP) award.

So how much is $12.5 million really?
$12.5 million can pay for just one year of Boston Red Sox ace Chris Sale’s contract. $12.5 million can also cover one-quarter of the Milwaukee Brewers annual payroll.
