Debra Messing was born in Brooklyn, New York on August 15, 1968. She is the daughter of Brian Messing, a sales executive, and Sandra Simmons, a professional singer and real estate agent. She has one sibling, Brett. Debra was raised in a Jewish household and much of her ancestors are Polish and Russian Jews.
Debra attended East Greenwich High School, where she contracted the acting bug. After high school, she studied liberal arts at Brandeis University and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Theater Arts. Debra continued her studies, entering the Graduate Acting Program at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts and finished with a Master of Fine Arts
In 1990, she met her future husband Daniel Zelman, an actor and writer, at NYU. The couple got married in September 2000 and had one child together, Roman Walker, but they divorced in 2012. Soon after, Debra entered into a relationship with Will Chase, but the couple separated in 2014.
Debra appeared in several high school and college productions. In 1993, Debra garnered critical success for her role in Tony Kushner’s “Angels in America: Perestroika.” A year later, Debra transitioned into television, appearing in the smash hit television series “NYPD Blue” in 1994 and 1995. In 1995, Debra made her big screen debut in the film “A Walk in the Clouds.” These roles helped her land parts in television shows like “Ned & Stacey,” “Seinfeld” and “Prey.”
Her biggest break came in 1998 when she was offered the lead part in the television series “Will & Grace.” The show became a massive success and Debra soon became one of the biggest stars on television. She eventually received parts in many motion pictures, including Woody Allen’s “Hollywood Ending,” Richard Gere’s “The Mothman Prophecies” and “The Wedding Date.”
For the next few years, Debra returned to television and broadway. She has returned to the 2017 relaunch of “Will & Grace.”
Over the years, Debra has received dozens of acting nominations, and has won several, including an Emmy Award and a Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Award.
