Name: Martin Charles Scorsese
Born: November 17, 1942
Martin Scorsese was born in New York City, New York on November 17, 1942. He is the son of Catherine Scorsese Cappa and Charles Scorsese, and he has one sibling, Frank.
Martin studied at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, earning a bachelor of arts in English in 1964.
Martin has been married five times: Laraine Marie Brennan, Julia Cameron, Isabella Rossellini, Barbara De Fina and Helen Schermerhorn Morris. He has three children: Francesca, Domenica Cameron and Cathy. He presently resides in New York City.
Martin fell in love with cinema when he was a child, frequently going to the movies and renting film reels from the local store. When he was at university, he started making short films, including “The Big Shave.” His first feature-length film was in 1967, called “I Call First.”
The legendary filmmaker became part of the famous “movie brats,” a group that included the likes of Steven Spielberg, Francis Ford Coppola and George Lucas. During this time, he also met Robert De Niro and director John Cassavetes.
His big break occurred in 1974, when Martin was selected by actress Ellen Burstyn to direct the Oscar-winning motion picture “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore.” It was in 1976 when Martin was introduced to the entire moviegoing public for the unforgettable film “Taxi Driver,” earning four Academy Award nominations. After floundering around for a few years, which some say was due to his cocaine addiction, Martin returned to the silver screen in a big way with “Raging Bull,” one of the greatest films of all time.
But it wasn’t until 1986 when Martin would secure funding for his future films. He directed the box office hit “The Color of Money,” a Tom Cruise-led sequel to the 1951 Paul Newman film “The Hustler.” This allowed him to direct some pet projects, including “The Last Temptation of Christ.”
In the 1990s, Martin became one of the most renowned directors for movies like “Goodfellas,” “Cape Fear,” “The Age of Innocence,” “Casino” and “Bringing Out the Dead.” The 2000s turned out to be one of Martin’s most successful time periods, with both critical and commercial successes: “Gangs of New York,” “The Aviator,” “The Departed” and “Shutter Island.”
His next project is “The Irishman,” a biographic film on Jimmy Hoffa, starring Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci.
Some of his favorite films are “2001: A Space Odyssey,” “8 ½,” “Citizen Kane,” “The Leopard” and “Vertigo.”
In total, Martin has received 81 Academy Award nominations, including 20 wins. He has also received 56 Golden Globe nominations and 84 BAFTA nominations.
