Matt Lauer was born on December 30, 1957 in New York City, New York. He is the son of Jay Robert Bauer, an executive, and Marilyn Lauer, a business owner. He has one sister, April Lauer Stone.

He received his undergraduate degree from Ohio University’s Scripps College of Communication, School of Media Arts and Studies.

In 1981, Matt married Nancy Alspaugh, a television producer, but they divorced in 1988. In 1997, Matt married Annette Roque, a Dutch model, and they had three children, Jack Matthew, Romy and Hijs. Reportedly, the couple has been living apart for several years as his wife has been disgusted with his womanizing.

Matt started his career as a WOWK-TV noon-hour newscast producer in 1979. A year later, he served as an on-air reporter for the television station’s 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. newscasts. As Matt’s career progressed, he worked at a number of TV programs across the country, including in major markets like New York, Boston, and Philadelphia. After hosting and co-hosting a wide variety of shows, he received his big break by working on “The Today Show” for NBC.

In 1992, he filled in as a newsreader when anchors were away. By 1994, Matt joined the program as a full-time news anchor, and served in this capacity until 2017. In addition to his work at the NBC morning talk show, Matt hosted programs on MSNBC, the Discovery Channel, and NBC. Throughout his tenure, Matt has achieve many milestones, like conducting presidential debates, interviewing world leaders, and co-hosting Olympic Games.

Matt earned about $20 million per year while working at NBC.

Matt was terminated from his contract in November 2017 for allegations of sexual assault and harassment. An extensive two-month investigation by Variety magazine suggests many inappropriate behaviors, such as the infamous Lauer Lock, gifting sex toys to female colleagues, and exposing himself.

Outside of NBC, Matt has appeared in films and TV shows, like “Will & Grace,” “Sesame Street,” “Land of the Lost,” and “Sharknado.”
