Russell Simmons was born in Queens, New York on October 4, 1957. He is the son of Daniel Simmons, a public school administrator, and Evelyn Simmons, a park administrator. He has two siblings: Daniel Simmons, Jr. and Rev Run.
Russell graduated from August Martin High School in 1975. Upon graduation, Russell enrolled in the City College of New York, but he quit two years later when he realized his career path was in hip hop.
