As a prince, he has been afforded a myriad of opportunities. He has been involved in competitive sports, became the 49th Imam of the Nizari Ismailis, and helped construct multiple buildings to enhance the quality of life for Nizari Ismailis.
But he will mostly be remembered for establishing the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), an organization that consists of more than 200 agencies and institutions with nearly 100,000 employees. For years, the AKDN has primarily been stationed in developing countries, providing humanitarian assistance through the the Aga Khan Health Services, the Aga Khan Education Services, the Aga Khan Planning and Building Services, and the Aga Khan Agency for Microfinance.
Despite being championed as a philanthropic or entrepreneurial endeavor, the Aga Khan is concerned about this description. He notes that this is part of his responsibility in his culture: aiding the impecunious. In any case, he has been awarded numerous honors and distinctions for his lifelong work, such as the Honorary Companion of the Order of Canada, the Ordinary Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire, and an Honorary LL.D. degree from Harvard University.
Aga Khan is well-known for his opulence and extravagance. As one of the richest royals in the world today, the Aga Khan maintains a private island in the Bahamas, two Bombardier jets, 100s of racehorses, a 164-foot yacht, and multiple estates around the world, including in France.
We estimate that the Aga Khan’s net worth is $800 million (2017).
So how much is $800 million really?
$800 million can help pay back Canadian taxpayers for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s expensive family vacation with the Aga Khan. $800 million is also the same gross domestic product (GDP) of more than 100 nations.
