Name: Warren Wilhelm Jr.
Born: May 8, 1961
Bill de Blasio was born in New York City, New York on May 8, 1961. He is the son of Warren Wilhelm, a contributing editor at Time magazine, and Maria de Blasio, an editorial assistant and author. He has two siblings: Donald and Steven. His uncle, Donald George Wilhelm, Jr., worked for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).
Bill studied at New York University, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in metropolitan studies. He also received a Master of International Affairs from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs.
He has been married to Chirlane McCray, a poet and activist, since 1994. They have two children, Dante and Chiara. The family presently resides in Gracie Mansion, the traditional residence for New York City mayors and their families.
Bill has been involved in politics since he finished post-secondary school. One of his very first jobs was working with the New York City Department of Juvenile Justice, and later at the Quixote Center in Maryland as a political organizer. In 1988, he decided to travel to Nicaragua, and worked in a humanitarian capacity – he was also a supporter of the ruling socialist government.
Upon his return to New York City, Bill was hired by a non-profit organization that offers healthcare services in Central America. In 1989, Bill volunteered for David Dinkins’ mayoral campaign, and after his victory, Bill served as an aide in city hall. It didn’t stop there. In 1994, New York Democratic Congressman Charles Rangel selected Bill to be his campaign manager, which allowed Bill to act as the regional director for the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) under President Bill Clinton. He later led Hillary Clinton’s successful New York Senate campaign.
Between 2001 and 2009, Bill served in the New York City Council, and would be overwhelmingly re-elected for three terms. Once his tenure was complete, he successfully ran as New York City Public Advocate. Two years later, he announced his candidacy for New York City mayor, and was victorious with 72 percent of the vote. He won a second term in November 2017, defeating Nicole Malliotakis with 66 percent of the vote.
Bill is a well-known big government socialist, and some of his political positions include adopting universal pre-kindergarten, supporting more public housing, banning horse-drawn carriages, and enhancing public transportation. He was also an ardent supporter of Clinton in the 2016 election, and often protested against President Donald Trump.
We estimate that Bill de Blasio’s net worth is $1.5 million (2017).
So how much is $1.5 million really?
$1.5 million can help fly to G20 Summits and stage demonstrations against President Donald Trump. $1.5 million can also go towards the interest payments on New York City’s $110 billion debt.
