Cynthia Nixon was born in New York City, New York on April 9, 1966. She is the daughter of Walter E. Nixon Jr., a radio journalist, and Anne Elizabeth.
When she graduated from Hunter College High School, Cynthia enrolled in Barnard College of Columbia University, earning a degree in English Literature. She also studied overseas with Semester at Sea.
Cynthia was in a relationship with Danny Mozes, a schoolteacher, between 1988 and 2003. They have two children, Samantha and Charles Ezekiel. A year after the couple separated, Cynthia entered into a relationship with Christine Marinoni, an education activist. The couple announced their engagement in April 2009 and then married in May 2012. Her wife also gave birth to a son, Max Ellington.
During her secondary school and college days, Cynthia was a regular performer on stage, on television, and in motion pictures. To help put herself through college, Cynthia took a lot of acting gigs. She made her feature film debut in the 1980 movie “Little Darlings” and made her television debut in the 1982 made-for-tv film “My Body, My Child.” Her first stage play was “The Philadelphia Story.”
Throughout the 1990s, Cynthia was a big hit on Broadway, while still trying to make it in Hollywood. Cynthia landed supporting roles in numerous films, including “The Out-of-Towners,” “Addams Family Values,” “The Pelican Brief,” and “Marvin’s Room.”
Her biggest break came in 1998 when she landed one of the featured roles in the smash hit HBO television series “Sex and the City.” She earned four Emmy nominations and finally won the award in 2004. Cynthia also played Miranda Hobbes in the two “Sex and the City” movies.
Since the series came to an end, Cynthia has not been short of work. She has appeared in a wide array of films and TV series, including “House,” “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” “Law & Order: Criminal Intent,” “Hannibal,” and “A Quiet Passion.” She has also continued her Broadway success.
Outside of the entertainment industry, Cynthia has been a prominent political activist, championing LGBT rights, gay marriage, public education, and women’s health. She has been honored by multiple organizations, such as the Human Rights Campaign and Yale University, for her activism.
In March 2018, Cynthia announced on Twitter that she would be running for Governor of New York, challenging incumbent Governor Andrew Cuomo, whose brother is CNN host Chris Cuomo.
