Name: Shohei Ohtani
Born: July 5, 1994
Shohei Ohtani was born in Oshu, Japan on July 5, 1994. He is the son of Kayoko Otani and Toru Otani, and he has one sibling, Ryuta.
Shohei studied at Hanamaki Higashi High School.
He played baseball in high school, where he immediately excelled at the sport as a pitcher. In 2012, Shohei played at the 18U Baseball World Championship with mixed results: 16 strikeouts, a 4.35 earned run average, and an 0-1 record.
Following the tournament, Shohei made it public that he considered playing in Major League Baseball, which drew the interest of the Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, and the Los Angeles Dodgers. Instead, he was drafted by the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters and signed a lucrative NPB contract.
Shohei would become one of the biggest stars in Japan as he specialized in both pitching and hitting. Between 2013 and 2017, Shohei posted a 42-15 pitching record with a 2.52 ERA and 624 strikeouts. On the hitting side, he maintained a .288 batting average with 48 home runs and 166 runs batted in (RBIs).
In 2017, he announced that he was going to play in the MLB. Shohei signed a three-year deal with the Los Angeles Angels that paid the league annual minimum (just under $600,000) and a signing bonus of $2.315 million. Shohei had a rough time in spring training, but he has been showing signs of promise since the beginning of the 2018 season in both starting pitching and smashing the ball as the designated hitter.
We estimate that Shohei Ohtani’s net worth is $5 million (2018).
So how much is $5 million really?
$5 million represents about one percent of the entire 2018 payroll of the LA Angels. $5 million can also account for five percent of the possible $100 million Shohei Ohtani could have earned if he waited until he was 25 to sign with Major League Baseball.
