Chip Gaines, former co-host of HGTV’s “Fixer Upper,” isn’t too pleased with a recent op-ed published a national newspaper that questioned his family’s commitment to raising their children.
Last month, the USA Today published an opinion piece written by Daryl Austin titled “For Chip and Joanna Gaines, family first is a talking point. But is it reality?” The contributor suggested that their family-first philosophy was not realistic considering how successful and enormous their business is, citing a new restaurant and cookbook.
“No matter how rich and famous, we are all limited by the same 24 hours in a day. You cannot do all they’ve done (or even a fraction of it) and still have any real time left over for family. Frankly, I wonder where they even find the time to brush their teeth, let alone spend quality, one-on-one time with each child daily.”
Austin, an entrepreneur, added that Chip and his wife, Joanna Gaines, do “a disservice to the parents who really are putting their children first.” He argues that Chip and his partner make it appear simple to maintain a work-life balance.
Chip Gaines Responds to USA Today Piece
Suffice to say, Chip was not happy with the newspaper article.
Chip went to Twitter to state that he doesn’t know the author and he doesn’t Chip. He noted that should something happen to his family, he would “shut this circus down so fast it will make your head spin.” In the end, according to Chip, it is possible to balance your career and family.
Here is the full tweet:
I dont know daryl, & he clearly doesnt know me. But for the record: If there is ever a need w/ my family (1st), I’ll shut this circus down so fast it will make your head spin. BUT jo & I believe, w/ God anything is possible. Including having an amazing family AND career you love. https://t.co/3DbWIIKMnh

The couple’s fans also came to their defense on the website and on social media.
Here were just some of the comments:
“So this person thinks he really knows them. What a jerk and what a stupid article. Sounds like jealousy to me. They can run all of that and still make family first!! What an idiot.”
“Wow the shear amount of jealousy that oozes from this article is amazing! I can’t believe this is even in print. Please Mr. Austin enlighten us all of your first-hand intimate knowledge of how the Gaines family lives their life. Oh wait you don’t know them? You don’t even live in the same state as them much less the same town this allowing you to witness from the outside how they live? Oh but wait you own a small business so clearly you know exactly how everyone else runs their businesses. USAToday, I am very disappointed by your support of tabloid journalism!”
“I have watched every show, I went to Waco to see their stores… I am a huge fan! Am I an expert..NO but I think they have done a great job of keeping their kids out of the limelight & putting them first!!!”
Chip and his family recently made headlines when it was announced they are expecting their fifth child.
