Laurie Metcalf was born on June 16, 1955 in Carbondale, Illinois. She is the daughter of James Metcalf, a university budget director, and Libby, a librarian. Her great-aunt is Zoe Akin, a Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright. She has two siblings: James and Linda.
Laurie studied at Illinois State University, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in theater in 1976.
She has been married twice before: first to Jeff Perry, the co-founder of the Steppenwolf Theatre Company (1983 to 1992), and then to Matt Roth, an actor (1983 to 2014). She has four children: Zoe, Mae Akins, Donovan, and Will Theron.
During her college days, Laurie was a hardworking secretary. When she received her acting degree, she began a successful career in the theater, earning critical acclaim and winning various thespian awards.
After getting noticed on stage, Laurie would appear in multiple motion pictures and television shows, including “Desperately Seeking Susan,” “Internal Affairs,” “A Dangerous Woman,” “Mistress,” “JFK,” and “Uncle Buck.” It was in 1988 when she found her biggest success, landing one of the lead roles of Jackie Darlene in the smash hit TV sitcoms “Roseanne,” which ran until 1997. Laurie won three consecutive Emmy Awards. She reprised the character in the revival of “Roseanne,” rejoining John Goodman, Roseanne Barr, and Sara Gilbert. When the series concluded, Laurie went right back to work on stage, in film, and on the small screen. Some of the projects included “The Big Bang Theory,” “A Doll’s House,” and “Portlandia.” One of her latest projects was for the film “Lady Bird,” in which she was nominated for a SAG Award, a Golden Globe Award, and the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Her next gig is the fourth film in the “Toy Story” franchise.
Outside of her thespian endeavours, Laurie appears in commercials for the children’s non-profit organization Plan USA.
