Valerie Jarrett was born in Shiraz, Iran on November 14, 1956. She is the daughter of Barbara T. Bowman and James E. Bowman, a pathologist and geneticist.
A few years after moving to Chicago, Illinois from London England, Valerie graduated from Northfield Mount Hermon and earned a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from Stanford University. She also received a Juris Doctor from the University of Michigan Law School. In May 2016, Valerie was given an honorary degree of Doctor of Laws from Colby College.
Valerie has been married once before to William Robert Jarrett, a director of obstetrics and gynecology. He passed away in November 1993, five years after their divorce. She has a daughter, Laura, an attorney and CNN reporter.
Valerie first got her start in politics when she worked for Chicago mayor Harold Washington as deputy corporation counsel for finance and development. In the years following, she served as deputy chief of staff for Mayor Richard Daley, commissioner of the department of planning and development, and chairwoman of the Chicago Transit Board.
Valerie then transitioned to the private sector, serving in a wide range of high-profile positions. She was CEO of the Habitat Company, a member of the Board of the Chicago Stock Exchange, board of trustees of the University of Chicago Medical Center, and board of directors of USG Corporation.
In 2008, Valerie was hired to be President Barack Obama’s senior advisors and confidantes. Throughout his tenure in the White House, Valerie was essentially the president’s right-hand man. In addition to her close relationship with President Obama, she also chaired and co-chaired several White House groups, including the White House Council on Women and Girls and the White House Task Force to Protect Students from Sexual Assault.
Since exiting the White House, Valerie has been hired as an advisor to the Obama Foundation. She was later appointed to the board of directors of Ariel Investments, as well as the ride-sharing giant Lyft. Valerie later inked a book deal for Viking Press.
Valerie made global headline news in May 2018 after Roseanne Barr tweeted:
