Liam Payne was born in Wolverhampton, England on August 29, 1993. He is the son of Geoff Payne, a fitter, and Karen, a nursery nurse. He has two siblings: Nicola and Ruth.

Studying at St. Peter’s Collegiate School, Liam finished 11 GCSEs. He then went on to learn about music technology at Wolverhampton College’s Paget Road campus. In school, he was heavily involved in athletics, nearly making it to the cross country English National Team for the 2012 Olympic Games. He also took boxing lessons.
