Name: Andrés Manuel López Obrador
Born: November 13, 1953
Andrés Manuel López Obrador was born in Tabasco, Mexico on November 13, 1953. He is the son of Manuela Obrador Gonzalez and Andres Lopez Ramon, two business owners.
He attended Marcos Becerra School and then enrolled at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), where he studied political science and public administration.
Obrador was married to Rocio Beltran Medina from 1979 to 2003. They had three children: Andres, Jose, and Gonzalo. She died after suffering from lupus. Three years later, he married Beatriz Gutierrez Muller, a civil servant, and the couple had one son in 2007, Enresto.
Once he graduated from college, he went straight into politics, joining the Institutional Revolutionary Party (NRI), as well as the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PDR). For a year, he worked in government in his hometown of Tabasco, which he quit to seek public office.
In July 2000, Obrador was elected as Head of Government of the Federal District, otherwise known as a mayor. The position allowed him to become a national figure, garnering an 84 percent approval rating. Once his tenure as mayor was over, he went into national politics, running for president of Mexico in 2006, but he lost to Felipe Calderon. His supporters did not accept the results and declared him as the “Legitimate President,” going as far as holding a ceremony celebrating his “victory.”
He ran for president again in 2012, but he lost by five percentage points to Enrique Pena Nieto.
In 2018, he ran for president once again, and finally secured a massive 30-point victory. Obrador ran on a leftist, populist campaign, though he opposes same-sex marriage, abortion, and cannabis legalization. Some of his policy proposals include: universal access to college, economic nationalism (greater central planning), raise social spending budgets, critical of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), and drug war reforms.
Outside of politics, he enjoys watching baseball – he ostensibly is a fan of the St. Louis Cardinals.
We estimate that Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s net worth is $3 million (2018).
So how much is $3 million really?
$3 million can pay for a small portion of the $160 million St. Louis Cardinals payroll. $3 million can also cover the cost of the Mexican president’s salary during his or her entire tenure.
