Name: James Francis Gunn Jr.
Born: August 5, 1966
Occupation: Filmmaker, musician, and comedian
James Gunn was born on August 5, 1966 in St. Louis Missouri. He is the son of James F. Gunn, an attorney, and Leota Gunn. He has five siblings: political writer Matt, Sean, screenwriter Brian, former Hollywood executive Patrick, and Beth.
He attended St. Louis University High School, a Jesuit secondary institution. He then enrolled in Saint Louis University where he earned a Bachelor of Arts, as well as a Master of Fine Arts from Columbia University in 1995.
In October 2000, James married actress Jenna Fischer, but the couple divorced eight years later.
James started his career in filmmaking at Troma Entertainment in 1995. At the company, he learned how to compose screenplays, scout locations, direct actors, distribute pictures, and design poster art. He write multiple Hollywood screenplays, such as “Scooby Doo,” “Dawn of the Dead,” “Slither,” and “Thir13en Ghosts,” until he got the opportunity to direct a blockbuster film.
In 2014, James was hired to direct the superhero smash hit film, “Guardians of the Galaxy.” He went on to direct the sequel, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.”
Outside of filmmaking, he has written two books: one a novel, titled “The Toy Collector,” and the other a co-authored book, titled “All I Need to Know about Filmmaking I Learned from the Toxic Avenger.”
After publicly slamming President Donald Trump and conservatives for many months on Twitter, conservative commentator Mike Cernovich drew attention to tweets written by James between 2008 and 2012, which contained jokes about pedophilia, child abuse, and rape. As a result, he was fired from “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” and Disney severed ties with James. Despite the vile nature of the tweets, many prominent individuals came to James’s defense, including Cenk Uygur, Patton Oswalt, Selma Blair, and Jim Jeffries. “Guardians of the Galaxy” cast members also came to James’s defense, penning a letter on social media in support of him.
He addressed the tweets and issued an apology:
“Many people who have followed my career know when I started, I viewed myself as a provocateur, making movies and telling jokes that were outrageous and taboo. As I have discussed publicly many times, as I’ve developed as a person, so has my work and my humor.
It’s not to say I’m better, but I am very, very different than I was a few years ago; today I try to root my work in love and connection and less in anger. My days saying something just because it’s shocking and trying to get a reaction are over. In the past, I have apologized for humor of mine that hurt people. I truly felt sorry and meant every word of my apologies.”
Photos of James attending a pedophilia-themed party have resurfaced as well.
He has been nominated for several awards, including a Golden Raspberry Award, a Hollywood Film Award, a Critics’ Choice Award, and a Saturn Award.
We estimate that James Gunn’s net worth is $40 million (2018).
So how much is $40 million really?
$40 million can cover the marketing cost of “Guardians of the Galaxy.” $40 million can also pay for one of the lavish themed parties that James Gunn attended throughout the years since arriving on the Hollywood scene.
