Ted Cruz was born in Calgary, Alberta on December 22, 1970. He is the son of Eleanor Elizabeth Darragh, a mathematician, and Rafael Cruz, a computer programmer. He has three siblings: Michael Wilson, Miriam, and Roxana.
Ted attended Faith West Academy and Second Baptist High School, two private high schools. He then graduated from Princeton University with a Bachelor of Arts in public policy. Ted then enrolled in Harvard Law School and earned a Juris Doctor degree.
Ted has been married to Heidi Nelson, head of the Investment Management Decision at Goldman Sachs and a former White House employee, since May 2001. The couple has two daughters, Caroline and Catherine. The family presently resides in Texas and Washington.
After law school, Ted was a law clerk to J. Michael Luttig of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit in 1995 and to William Rehnquist, Chief Justice of the United States. Once he completed his clerkships, Ted went into private practice, working for a couple of law firms.
Following President George W. Bush’s successful 2000 election campaign, in which Ted was instrumental from a legal standpoint, Ted was tapped as Assistant Deputy Attorney General and director of policy planning at the U.S. Federal Trade Commission. He returned to Texas and was appointed to the office of Solicitor General of Texas until 2008 when he went back into private practice.
In 2012, Ted announced that he would be running to represent Texas in the U.S. Senate. He won the Republican nomination by 14 points and defeated his Democratic opponent, Paul Sadler, by 16 points.
Six years later, Ted confirmed that he would be running for U.S. President. He was one of the final GOP candidates in the primary, but ultimately conceded to President Donald Trump. Ted returned to his duties in Washington and ran for re-election in Texas.
Some of his political positions includes opposing net neutrality, repealing the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare), auditing the Federal Reserve System, and leaving key issues, like same-sex marriage and drug legalization, to the states.
