Name: William Pelham Barr
Born: May 23, 1950
William Barr was born in New York City, New York on May 23, 1950. He is the son of Donald Barr, an author, and Mary Margaret Ahern, a faculty member of Columbia University.
Raised in the Upper West Side, William studied at Corpus Christi School and Horace Mann School. He enrolled in Columbia University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in government in 1971 and a Masters degree in government and Chinese studies in 1973. Four years later, he garnered a J.D. degree from George Washington University Law School.
William has been married to Christine since 1973. They have one child, Mary, who works at the U.S. Department of Justice as one of the lead officials tackling the opioid crisis.
Before attaining his law degree, William worked at the Central Intelligence Agency. Once he received his J.D., William served as a law clerk to Judge Malcolm Wilkey of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. For more than a year, he worked as the Deputy Assistant Director for Legal Policy in the President Ronald Reagan White House.
He took a break from public service and went into the private sector for nearly a decade, working for Shaw, Pittman, Potts, and Trowbridge.
William was appointed to the U.S. Department of Justice as Assistant Attorney General by then-President George H.W. Bush, and then appointed to Deputy Attorney General. He was nominated and approved as U.S. Attorney General by both Republicans and Democrats.
He left the DOJ to co-chair a commission on criminal justice reform in Virginia. He also returned to private practice, acting as general counsel for GTE Corporation.
In December 2018, President Donald Trump announced that he will nominate William for Attorney General to succeed Jeff Sessions. With a Republican-controlled Senate, it is likely that he will be confirmed.
Outside of law, William is an avid bagpipe player, playing the instrument since he was eight years old.
We estimate that William Barr’s net worth is $20 million (2019).
So how much is $20 million really?
$20 million can buy a house in Washington, D.C.’s richest neighborhood. $20 million is also nearly the entire cost of what Robert Mueller has spent in his Trump-Russia investigation.
